One year and one day ago I wrote one of my very firsts posts on this blog, about Melbourne Bike Polo‘s Christmas Tourney. That weekend of polo was long, very warm and extremely sunny. The Christmas tourney I played in this year was all upside down (or some might argue that it was the right way up). The lovely people at Cambridge Bike Polo, in the United Kingdom, were putting on the show. The day(light) was short, very cold and slightly wet. People here tell me that this is the way Christmas is meant to be!
Despite the festive weather the polo went ahead as planned and the level of competition was very high. It was a one day tournament with four Swiss rounds to seed the teams and then a single elimination. The day went smoothly with lots of good polo, heckles and delicious food, kindly provided by our hosts. The final featured Christmas Hits (Josh, Emmet and Mat Cosmic) vs Va Va Voom (Luca, Boagy and Frax). The police turned up at 8:50 to let us know that the lights were going to be turned off at 9pm due to ‘insurance issues’ so it was decided that the game would last either 15 minutes or until the lights turned out, whichever came first. In the end the lights stayed on so we got to watch Christmas Hits defeat Va Va Voom 6-2 in a nice long game.
