It’s official, bumbags are back in fashion amongst bike-riding hipsters, except now they are called hip pouches – they sit on your hip and they are totally hip. The hip pouch isn’t a local phenomenon, they’ve gone worldwide. My theory is that they represent a new dawn of anti-materialism, and cruising the streets adorned by the hip pouch alone is a signifier of the wearer’s freedom from consumerism’s mantra. It’s time to own less and do more. Which is great but, you know, you still need to carry SOME stuff. Which is why I, and many others, have become devotees of the hipster bumbag.
This bad boy is the bumbag I am rocking at the moment. I carry all kinds of stuff in it; it fits my wallet, phone, a little notebook, a snack, and my multi-tool easily. You could get a spare tube and a pump in the main compartment, but not much else. There are two zippered pockets that are good for keeping money or your phone. It’s held shut by two strips of velcro, so your stuff doesn’t fall out. It comes with a hip strap made of webbing, so you can easily clip it on over anything, even dresses.
Chrome Hip Pouch
The really cool thing about this hipster bumbag is that you can carry your D-lock in it cause it has a special pocket for it at the back. You have to thread this guy on to your belt and it is held shut by one strip of velcro instead of two, so it’s a bit less secure than the Bagaboo. Chrome guarantees this bag for life, which is sweet.
alexbender Leather Fanny Pack
This hip pouch is one for the truly stylish minimalist. It sits flat so you can really only carry your wallet, phone, and some chewing gum. It comes with sexy metal hardware and an integrated belt.
BOGear Cellblock M
Not as pretty as the other pouches, the Cellblock M has way more useable space, by virtue of it’s no-nonsense rectangular shape. This picture really shows just how much stuff you can fit in there, 2.6L of stuff in fact. It has two smaller pockets inside so you can organise all that stuff. BOGear bags are also famously durable, so you will be rocking your Cellblock for years and years to come.
Vaya Bags Recycled Bike Tube Hip Pouch
Not only is this little bumbag made from a whole bunch of recycled bike bits, it is also fully waterproof, which is a win in my books. It comes with a webbing belt, and closes with velcro with a clip for added security. It is on the small side, but is well big enough for carrying around the essentials.
While this pouch is twice the price of almost all the other ones on this list, the legions of Freitag fans out there are testimony to just how practical, durable and ultra-cool these bags are. It is the details that make this bumbag great: there is an elastic tab for holding a pen, it is fully waterproof, and it has a separate movable holster for carrying your D-lock, so you can even out the weight by shifting it to your opposite hip. Made from recycled truck tarps, each Jamie pouch is unique and super-durable.
