“There are two things I have done most of my adult life: graphic design and bike riding. These bike badges just seemed to be the perfect marriage of the two.”
– Scott Mayeda
Looking for that special something to finish off your bike? Need a gift for a cyclist who has everything? These custom head tube badges from Etsy store InsigniaWorks are just the ticket.
InsigniaWorks owner Scott Mayeda is based in San Diego and makes the brass or nickel head badges using acid-etching.
You can either choose one of his designs, or send him your own digital artwork. It will then be transferred to your chosen metal using a heat process and etched in an acid bath – a process which results in character-adding imperfections. The badge can then be finished with a patina, or painted and rubbed out.
Double-sided 3M tape allows you to fit the pre-curved badge to your head tube.
I think these would make a much better prize for cycling events than a trophy, as it would always be with you while riding.
My vintage restoration project bike, Prudence, will look great sporting the website logo on her head tube – I’d better start saving the $50 + postage I’ll need to get her one.
